Elterwater
Surely one of the most picturesque villages in the Lake District, Elterwater is the gateway to the famous Langdale valley. Indeed, as you come over the rise into Elterwater from Skelwith Bridge, you are presented with a typical Lakeland view: sheep grazing on the common in front of white-washed cottages with slate roofs, and the craggy peaks of the Langdale Pikes rising behind.

The Britannia Inn at Elterwater Elterwater & The Langdale Pikes
Just 80 yards from Meadow Bank, the focal point of Elterwater village is the old Britannia Inn, a gem of a pub with low ceilings, slate floors and a good choice of local ales and excellent pub food. Popular with walkers, the Britannia is on everyone’s circuit, and there’s no sunnier spot for a lunchtime rest than the pub’s friendly terrace overlooking the village green, complete with the spreading maple tree.
The village’s other attractions include a general store/post office, a bowling green and an art gallery displaying the work of one of Lakeland’s most famous artists, Judy Boyes, whose paintings are displayed throughout Meadow Bank. The gallery is next door to Meadow Bank, and must definitely be visited!
